It's Bicycling Month!

Actually, every month is bicycling month, but this is the one that's recognized thusly. And rightly so, at least in this part of the world. The sweet winds of a cool May morning while riding your bicycle can make you fly, fly, fly. Freedom, bicycle is thy name.

In honor of this month, I'll offer some of my favorite bike quotes. Enjoy and be inspired.

Get a bicycle. You will not regret it, if you live.

Mark Twain

Every time I see an adult on a bicycle, I no longer despair for the future of mankind.

H.G. Wells

I'll tell you what I think of bicycling. I think it has done more to emancipate women than any one thing in the world. I rejoice every time I see a woman ride by on a bike. It gives her a feeling of self-reliance and independence the moment she takes her seat; and away she goes, the picture of untrammelled womanhood.

Susan B. Anthony

Cycle tracks will abound in Utopia.

H.G. Wells

When man invented the bicycle he reached the peak of his attainments. Here was a machine of precision and balance for the convenience of man. And (unlike subsequent inventions for man's convenience) the more he used it, the fitter his body became. Here, for once, was a product of man's brain that was entirely beneficial to those who used it, and of no harm or irritation to others. Progress should have stopped when man invented the bicycle.

Elizabeth West

Think of bicycles as rideable art that can just about save the world.

Grant Petersen

When the spirits are low, when the day appears dark, when work becomes monotonous, when hope hardly seems worth having, just mount a bicycle and go out for a spin down the road, without thought on anything but the ride you are taking.

Arthur Conan Doyle

The bicycle had what is called the "wabbles," and had them very badly. In order to keep my position, a good many things were required of me, and in every instance the thing required was against nature.

Mark Twain, on learning to ride a bike

That reminds me...I have to fix my bicycle. I can ride it, but it won't shift from whatever gear it's in. I wish I lived close enough to ride to work. My dad still rides to and from work every day from spring through fall; I think he's been doing it for over 20 years now!

My husband agrees with you. He is itching for warmer weather so he can ride. I am still on a recumbent in the basement but watch our world..I may get on the streets next year. LOL

Love the quotes...

We are hoping to "graduate" the girls from Big Wheels to real bikes this month! Great timing! :)

I just got my bike from the 1980s fixed. I like it better than my new bike. I guess I like old things.

I am planning to put an index to my reviews on my website soon, so you can find them easier.

Dan, great bike quotations!

They are great quotes, aren't they? You know what I find interesting is the number of well knowns who spoke so rhapsodically of bicycling. Many don't know that for a brief period right before and after the turn of the 20th century, bicycling was a huge rage (which coincides with many of these quotes). The streets in many towns began being paved not because of cars but because of the bicycle lobby.

Where'd we go wrong?!
