Don't be Deceived

My dear conservative, Republican friends... There is an effort out there by many in the GOP to sell a stupidly false claim, to try to instill fear of your neighbors.

Don't buy the lies. I know you. I know you believe in truth and decency. Stand up against it.

In Florida, the GOP governor (DeSantis) is selling some dangerous lies for unknown reasons, but I suspect because he knows demonizing "CRT" and other GOP flash-words gets some in the GOP riled up because they fear CRT, even though they don't understand it. Don't buy into the fear.

In the news:

"DeSantis has taken a lead role nationally in Republican efforts to aggressively push back against liberal cultural values and what he calls “woke indoctrination.”

A measure labeled “Individual Freedom,” also known as the "Stop WOKE Act," was passed during this year's legislative session and still waits for the governor's signature."

++++++

They are banning MATH books, they say, because these MATH books contain CRT, which they have banned in Florida schools. They are indoctrinating parents and children to fear CRT and demonize liberals while saying they value individual freedom and, they say, oppose being told what to think.

Think about that. They are saying...

"We don't want you to think about these CRT ideas, because we shouldn't be told what to think. We so believe in individual liberty and not being told what to think that we're going to ban these books in our schools or even a mythical mention of CRT..."

Don't you see? It's all a lie and there almost certainly are no mentions of CRT in a third grade math book (what does that even look like??). Let the fact that they won't even cite what it is they're protesting be a clue that they're lying to you to try to scare you into hating your neighbors while saying (falsely) that CRT wants us to hate our neighbors.

Another way of putting this from DeSantis and people like him is that they are not saying they value free speech and independent thinking. Just the opposite.

They don't value people being critical of the US in any way or acknowledging the very real evils of slavery and racism in our past. They don't want any mentions of that happening in schools and they will ban any books that have even a hint of concern about evils of racism in our very real history. They value their "free speech" and want to limit/ban/demonize/distort/bear false witness against anything they perceive to be hostile to their views. Their views and hell, their very way of life - they will tell you openly and loudly - are being opposed and destroyed and the way to battle this attack on their "way of life" is to ban and demonize any opposing, disagreeing views.

If they valued free speech, they would welcome - even if they disagreed with some conclusions of some people - a reasonable discussion about racism in our history. Or the oppression of LGBTQ people in our history. Or the denial of freedom of self determination to women in our history.

They are saying, We want to see OUR understanding of history only... any reports or interpretations about history that WE don't approve of need to be silenced and removed.

It's a scam. Don't buy into it.

Another story reviewing the actual content of these banned math books that do not include CRT. The short of it, it appears, is that these books DO include something called SEL (Social and Emotional Learning).

"The circular diagram names the five core skills students should develop: self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision-making, social awareness and relationship building. This framework was developed by CASEL, an education nonprofit.

Until recently, the idea of building social-emotional skills was a fairly uncontroversial one in American education. Research suggests that students with these skills earn higher test scores."

https://www.nytimes.com/2022/04/22/us/florida-rejected-textbooks.html?utm_source=pocket-newtab

So, wow. The GOP has come out against these books NOT because they contain CRT (they don't) but because they use research-based, non-controversial ideas like the notion that helping students (especially students with math anxiety) improve in five core skills:

self-awareness
self-management
responsible decision-making
social awareness
relationship building

This truly is not news to anyone in the education field. Students with strengths in these five traits DO tend to do better and do tend to have the confidence to "try another way" and recognize that they DO have what it takes to complete the math problems and that they CAN do it.

As someone who was a student with math anxiety, I can tell you I wish this was promoted when I was a student!

That this is "controversial" to GOP types shows a lack of awareness of how education happens and an antipathy to research-driven teaching methods.

"Just teach and make them succeed!" they seem to be saying. "And whatever you do, don't let research-based educational information inform your teaching or help your students!"

This is so spectacularly stupid and anti-education.

And here is a right-wing source "reviewing"/critiquing SEL harshly because it seeks "equity" for students of all backgrounds.

From the City-Journal...

"In practice, Transformative SEL resembles most other equity-driven pedagogies. CASEL recently released a list of “Guiding Questions” for teachers to evaluate SEL practice “through an equity lens.” They include: “In what ways does your identity . . . inform who you are as an educator?” “In what ways have you taken action to impact change when you recognize inequity in your school?” “How do historic and systemic issues of inequity contribute to your understanding of the root causes of the problems you see?”

Witness the concept creep: teaching relationship skills and self-management now requires understanding and redressing “historic inequities.”

https://www.city-journal.org/social-and-emotional-learning-equity-in-disguise
This is controversial? Problematic?? How? Good Lord!

I'm reading this critique and finding comments like this...

"In practice, Facing History emphasizes both social justice and student activism, recommending projects that ask students to “Identify a problem,” “Come up with a solution,” “Identify action tools,” and “DO SOMETHING.”

But I'm not seeing ANYTHING that suggests why these are bad things. It's like the assumption that teaching students about history, about empowerment, about finding solutions and working for justice (even subtly in the context of simple math or other classes)... it's like they're working under the assumption that these overtly good things are somehow bad things because they are "liberal" or supported by liberals.

Working for an equitable school system where all students are empowered... working for positive solutions and community empowerment, working for justice... these are all good things that should not be a partisan divide. I'm totally fine with disagreeing about HOW we work for justice and equity... what that looks like in practice... but disagreeing with the concepts without any explanation of WHY it's bad (what specifically is bad about it)... that is just so bizarre.

Witness the concept creep: teaching relationship skills and self-management now requires understanding and redressing “historic inequities.”

Oh, the horror!

Still awaiting full access to the internet as opposed to the frustrating limitations of using my phone.

Books are reviewed all the time. Some are chosen for use in schools, while others are not. Those not chosen have never before been considered "banned". In the meantime, more were considered acceptable than those which weren't. What's wrong with accepted books that all leftist attention is focused on those which weren't? Will students not be given an acceptable education in mathematics, which is the point?

Also, while there was no list provided by the unjustly hated as to the books not accepted, it is absurd to suggest there is no way leftist haters can't access that info, by, for example, contacting the publishers directly.

I'll have more to say about your lame and hateful attack soon enough.

Banning facts and calling firing squad executions of civil servants who advocate saving lives: Republicans are today’s fascists.

“Oklahoma GOP Chair John Bennett's comments advocating violence against the top infectious disease expert earned him applause at a campaign event.

Bennett then railed against something he described as “wokeness confusion,” which he alleged is being pushed “down our throats now.”

Then came his sinister line about Fauci, who has been targeted by Attachment.pngrepeated death threats for his public health work during the coronavirus pandemic.

“And by the way, we should try Anthony Fauci and put him in front of a firing squad,” said Bennett, not really expanding on what crime he believes Fauci has committed.

Then he added: “And for the Secret Service, if they’re listening, I’m not advocating we kill Anthony Fauci … until he’s convicted of his crimes through a court.”

Dan Trabue said...

Marshal, first of all, empty attacks on other people won't happen here. Just stop it. Feodor accurately quoted an actual story about an actual modern GOP type and his actual words. Why not begin by noting, "Man, Bennett's comments are out of hand and dangerous. He should be rebuked by fellow conservatives for making such dangerous statements!" ...? You'd have more credibility.

Marshal... "Books are reviewed all the time. Some are chosen for use in schools, while others are not. Those not chosen have never before been considered "banned"."

You may be right, this is not strictly, exactly an instance of book banning. It's a case of trying to ban an idea (Cancel Culture that so many on the Right are complaining about). Conservatives appear to not understand CRT but their skewed understanding (full of twists and misunderstandings) has caused them to seek to Cancel any mention of anything that they perceive to be CRT-related.

AND they are using CRT as a bogeyman to further scare up the confused and ignorant Right into hating and fearing their more progressive and darker neighbors.

In this case, even though there is nothing about CRT in these books that anyone has pointed to, yet, (literally NOTHING), they are saying they have cancelled these books NOT because there was anything wrong with the math (there does not appear to have been) but because they allege it contained CRT (it didn't).

What it DID have that they also pointed to as problematic is SEL and these NON-educators (at least primarily) think that they know better than educators and researchers in this field and they want to ban/cancel THE IDEAS found in SEL.

So, it's perhaps less about book banning and more about IDEA banning and cancel culture. But again, I thought you conservatives were against the cancel culture.

Dan Trabue said...

As to the Bennett story, Marshal, if you want to comment here, why not begin by doing what should be incredibly easy. Denounce Bennett. Denounce the conservative crowd for cheering and applauding this dangerous violent speech.

Show you have some credibility and moral wherewithal.

The story again:

"Then he added, 'And by the way, we should try Anthony Fauci and put him in front of a firing squad.'

The crowd cheered and applauded in response. "

Watch the video of this sick-minded individual, standing in front of flags and Bible verses and a bunch of apparently blood-thirsty crazy Christians...

https://news.yahoo.com/republicans-cheer-congressional-candidate-demands-064818033.html

This is an easy step, Marshal. This sort of language is stupid, deadly and wrong. Just say that you can agree with that simple little bit of reality and reason and decency.

Marshal Art said...

"Marshal, first of all, empty attacks on other people won't happen here."

They happen here all the time. The post itself is an empty attack on conservatives, which should never emanate from a guy who has no understanding of conservatism.

" Why not begin by noting, "Man, Bennett's comments are out of hand and dangerous. He should be rebuked by fellow conservatives for making such dangerous statements!" ...? You'd have more credibility."

First, I only have a "credibility problem" with liars like you.

Secondly, by your trolls own testimony, the dude called for putting Fauci on trial and executing him IF convicted. You never hear that kind of grace from lefties. Lefties go right to execution.

Dan Trabue said...

?????!!!!!

"putting Fauci on trial and executing him IF convicted..."

!!!

Do you NOT understand how batshit crazy that statement is? Put Fauci on trial for WHAT???

Good God!

One more time: Can you acknowledge how very evil it is to talk of putting a political enemy on trial when he's committed no crimes??

WHY do I even have to ask this?

Dan Trabue said...

This is an example of TWO stupidly false and unsupported claims. This is what you can't do here.

Marshal Art said...

"You may be right, this is not strictly, exactly an instance of book banning."

It's not at all a case of book banning. Not even close. It's a case of selecting from a pool of options the best available for the purpose of educating students in a specific subject of study. Books not selected are not "banned" simply because the books didn't make the cut.

"It's a case of trying to ban an idea."

Still wrong. It's a case of focusing the students' attention on the subject matter without the unnecessary distraction of that which is irrelevant to the subject matter.

"Conservatives appear to not understand CRT..."

No doubt you need to think so.

I'm still researching "SEL". I doubt you could produce solid evidence supporting its use. That is, is straight line between its implementation and alleged positive outcomes. As usual, you citing "experts" is again your sole argument it's worth a damn. Honest and intelligent people to whom you unjustly dare to condescend aren't so easily persuaded.

Dan Trabue said...

Dan Trabue said...

Again: WHAT CRIME has Fauci POSSIBLY committed that he would be arrested? WHERE is ANY evidence to support such a claim?

It's like the idiotic "lock her up" chants that fascist zealots would yell to your actual criminal pervert president... you can't just make up claims out of thin air.

With Trump, there were and continue to be actually criminal-appearing behavior he's engaged in... collusion, tax evasion, sexual assault, abusing a charity, abusing political office for his own enrichment, etc etc.

Fauci has only dispensed reasonable medical advice.

What crime?

Support.

Not wishful thinking fueled assassination fantasies.

Dan Trabue said...

What?

Dan Trabue said...

Marshal... "But you see, Dan, it is often the case one's innocence is determined by being on trial."

But there HAS to be SOME reason to make an arrest. You can't just willy nilly put people on trial without being charged with an actual crime. Really not liking a perceived political opponent is NOT a reason to arrest someone.

YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT CONVICTING HIM OF... SOMETHING THAT IS A CAPITOL OFFENSE.

WHAT?

MURDER?

RAPE?

WHAT?

And I'm curious: Is it the case you're reading your conspiracy theory source and even YOU are not able to find a clear, direct answer in their mishmash of mad ramblings at that site?

Like this:

"Fauci should be convicted of fraud, because he committed fraud when he said there was an epidemic, when there WAS no epidemic."

The problem with that claim is that 1. You'd have to show he deliberately committed fraud and that there was no epidemic (with some kind of proof that counters what all the experts are saying) and 2. Fraud is not a capitol offense.

And I can't tell you how very dull and boring it is to try to get you to answer reasonable adult-level questions and do so respectfully. So, ON THIS POST, this is your last chance to answer these questions AND provide proof from some reputable source ("www.TheEpidemicWasStartedByTheIlluminati.net" is not a reputable source, just fyi)

Dan Trabue said...

Marshal, I read your link and it read like the half-witted ramblings of a madman. There was nothing there. It had not so much to do with the source and more the lack of content and reliable reputable sources. This is what it should look like...

Rational journalistic outfits lead with a clear and concise statement of the story then offer sources and support.

"Fauci should be charged with murder (clear, understandable)

...according to chief prosecutor Smith (a reputable source)

...in the death of 1,000 US citizens between April and May of 2021 (further clarification of the initial claim)

...due to intentional advocating of a vaccine he knew contained poison (again, even more clarification)

...Smith said on Thursday that a witness confirmed Fauci said this in a text conversation they had on May 21..."

Like that.

But you're an adult. You're not ignorant of how supporting claims work. I've given you multiple chances to actually answer questions and making your case in a rational adult manner and you continually chose not to.

You're done on this thread.

Dan Trabue said...

The list of capital offenses is not terribly long. Murder of all sorts, deliberate killing of all sorts, treason, rape, destroying an aircraft, et cetera.

Marshal had ONE simple thing to do. Name the capital offense that Fauci had committed. Marshal couldn't do that. The reason is simple... of course, Fauci committed no capital offenses. It's just another of the endless stream of stupidly false brain diarrhea charges coming from modern conservatives.

Dan Trabue said...

Also, Marshal, what I ASKED you is what I WANTED YOU to answer. What specific capital crime had Fauci committed. That was an easy one word or maybe one sentence answer. IF you then wanted to provide support in the form of a link, I wasn't objecting to that (although as noted, the link you provided was foaming at the mouth and not helpful). But in spite of multiple specific requests for you to give the simple answer, you continually opted not to. So, don't complain that your rude, vulgar attack ravings were deleted when you offered those in lieu of simple, direct answers.

We don't have to agree for conversations to be adult and respectful. And step one is simply answering questions directly and clearly. ESPECIALLY when you're calling for a potential firing squad!!

From this point you raised the bar to capital crimes while I had my link ready to post. I ignored the capital crimes crap and posted it, after which without reading it, you deleted it and rebutted it with your Reuters crap which wasn't addressing that which I posted. Now, I haven't read the entire 40+ pages of charges brought to the ICC regarding Fauci (and others), and due to technical issues, I must search it out again to finish. Knowing you didn't read the article I posted which referenced those charges, there's no freakin' way you ever read the actual charges. But for now, just Fauci's "recommendations" to deny access to therapeutics such as HCQ and Ivermectin...as well as his lies about their ineffectiveness...thousands died needlessly. That alone is a direct result of HIS opinions and direction dispensed as "reasonable medical advice".

https://www.politifact.com/factchecks/2022/apr/13/one-america-news/scientific-evidence-does-not-support-ivermectin-tr/

2. He offered his medical expertise in saying that this was not known to be an effective covid treatment. He was factually correct. (See above)

3. EVEN IF he was mistaken, being mistaken about what's the best medical advice is not a crime.

So, given that he wasn't mistaken, and that is not a crime you Chrome even if he was, are you prepared now to admit you have no crimes crumbs to identify to charge him with?? Last chance. I mean it. Totally last chance. Admit that reality or move on.

Marshal... " Those like you delete and cancel what we find to be true."

The problem is that you don't recognize the irony in you saying this. You refuse to condemn someone calling for a firing squad for Fauci (can't get much more cancelled than that!) because you don't like Fauci's opinions and you can't acknowledge - in spite of NO evidence - that Fauci has committed no crimes, or at least that you can't identify any crime he's committed (you know, actual against the law crimes, as opposed to hurting your opinions because his expert opinion does not align with your ignorant opinion)... and you are trying to suggest that WE'RE canceling people?

As to deleting your false claims, that's not an assault of free speech, you know. You have the free speech to make whatever claims you want. What you DON'T have freedom to do is force that opinion on others. You can believe in your little head that the "election was stolen" and "ivermectim cures Covid," and "white people are being replaced," but no one is obliged to take such nonsense seriously.

And yet, WE'RE the ones who want to cancel people??

"(This question reflects an opinion for which you have no evidence to suggest I support, have suggested or in any way condone."

? Do you not understand how making criminal charges work? How REASON works?

IF someone claims that the Martians have taken over Congress by replacing all the Democrats with Martians who are actively hostile to the US, CONGRESSIONAL DEMOCRATS will not be charged with a crime... because it is a ludicrous and false claim. The burden is on the one making the charge to support it. There is NO DATA anyone has presented anywhere in all of human history in any place in the world that says Fauci has committed a crime. IT. DOES. NOT. EXIST.

Now, all YOU have to do is point to the crime that Fauci has committed (a violation of a US law) AND provide support for it. I don't have to prove he's innocent. The reality of ZERO evidence or data is all reasonable people need.

You want to make a stupidly false claim? Support it. Don't ask us to provide "proof" it never happened.

Good Lord, have mercy on your petty small little soul.

I refuse to condemn those calling for Fauci's head because I haven't seen what they're offering as reason to sentence him to that fate. My understanding Fauci's incompetence and deceptions are a separate issue.

Fauci's most glaring crime is his insistence we be mandated to take an experimental drug which isn't necessary due to the proven effectiveness of therapeutics which should have negated the Emergency Use Authorization. This is a clear violation of the Nuremberg Code. People have died and suffered injury as a result.

Sentencing someone to death, should that person be found guilty of capital crimes, is not "cancelling" speech as you and those of your ilk do at every turn. Your constant deletion of my comments here is proof enough of that. A death sentence is just punishment for one guilty of a crime compelling such a sentence. The cancelling you and your kind do is unjust and simply a means to stifle truths you find inconvenient.

Fauci has no "expert opinion". He's a bureaucrat who should have lost his gig back during the AIDS crisis when he prevented effective treatments at that time as well.

"As to deleting your false claims, that's not an assault of free speech, you know."

It's worse than that. It's you running from truths and facts you can't overcome like the weasle-like coward you are. I don't post false claims. This is proven by your consistent inability to disprove what I post. Saying effectively, "Nyuh uh" doesn't make my posts false.

"What you DON'T have freedom to do is force that opinion on others."

How typically leftist!! Stating truth...or even stating what I only believe is true...is not "forcing" anything. Deleting comments is forcing your opinion on me by stifling my expressed opinions and facts.

"You can believe in your little head that the "election was stolen" and "ivermectim cures Covid," and "white people are being replaced," but no one is obliged to take such nonsense seriously."

I'm well aware that stupid and deceitful people like you can believe what you like. But people of character and honor...including anyone who dares claim to be Christian...needs to have better to rebut that which they don't like to hear than that weak-assed argument. Someday you'll really have to present some tangible evidence any of that is untrue. By the way, no one states that ivermectin or HCQ are "cures". Indeed, they are known to work least for those closest to death from Covid. If they were cures, that wouldn't be the case. They're preventative. "(This question reflects an opinion for which you have no evidence to suggest I support, have suggested or in any way condone.""

The questions which follows this has no relation to it whatsoever. I've never supported putting anyone on trial when they've committed no crimes. However, many people have been put on trial for crimes for which the trial resulted in a verdict of innocent. So you clearly have no idea how criminal charges work, or what reason is.

"There is NO DATA anyone has presented anywhere in all of human history in any place in the world that says Fauci has committed a crime. IT. DOES. NOT. EXIST."

Yes there is. I provided a link to it and you deleted it like the wussy you are, "rebutting" it with a Reuters link which had no relation whatsoever to mine.

"Now, all YOU have to do is point to the crime that Fauci has committed (a violation of a US law) AND provide support for it. I don't have to prove he's innocent. The reality of ZERO evidence or data is all reasonable people need."

That's funny coming from a putz who has yet to support a single charge he made against Donald Trump. Yet again, I provided...you deleted without reading.

"You want to make a stupidly false claim?"

I never make stupidly false claims, you lying sack of shit. That's YOUR thing, and you do it constantly and have for years. What's more, you never support jack.
